The Modern Feein' Market was brought to
life again in 1973 and is held on the first Saturday in
June. Traditionally all stall holders and participent
dress in Edwardian or Victorian dress. The festivities
include traditional and modern entertainment, food and
drink stalls, as well market stalls.
Attractions often included :
Bonny Baby Competition
Highland Dancers from The Lindsay School of Dance
Folk Singers (with a folk ceilidh in the evening)
Vintage bus rides
Arts and craft stalls
Threshing machine
and lots, lots more.
What it Was?
The Original Feein' Market was a "Hiring Fair"
for the local farm Labourers. In the 18th and 19th centuries,
every May and November of each year the local farm workers
would gather in the Market Square to agree term for
the coming 6-12 months. The contract was sealed with
a "fee", and with this the employee often
celebrated at the pleasures at the Market itself.

The annual feeing market for married farm-servants was held in the Market
Square, Stonehaven last week. The attendance of both farmers and farm-servants
was very large. Feeing was stiff, and new engagements were not so profitable
in the monetary sense to the servants. The following were the rates of
the wages :
Foremen and ploughmen with charge, from £27 to £88 per annum, with the
usual perquisites; others from £25 to £27. Mearns Leader Newspaper
