The document was laid out for signing on a gravestone on Feb. 28th 1638 in
Grayfriars Church Yard, Edinburgh. First to sign was the Earl of
Montrose, later to change sides in 1644. Within a week most parishes,
excepting many of the Highland clans, had accepted and given adherance
to the harsh disciplines of the Covenant.
In essence the covenant was both a political document and a declaration
of faith, made up of three Sections.
Part (1) The Kings Confession:
Signed by James IV of Scotland (James I of England) in 1581
committing the King to defence of the doctrine of
the true, reformed Church of Scotland.
Part (2) This specified the act of parliament
establishing the Protestant religion in Scotland.
Part (3) bound by oath all the signatories and members of the reformed
Church of Scotland to conserve at all hazard the autonomy of their
Church with a form of government sanctioned by "God's Plain Word".
