The Stonehaven Highland Games

[games.gif]

Lord Arbuthnott leads the opening of
the Stonehaven Highland Games (1994)

The events, field, track and the traditional heavy events also include Highland Dancing and Bagpiping. The games are opened by the Games Chieftain, Lord Arbuthnott, and all those taking part in the Heavy events, Hammer, Heavy Stone as well as Tossing the Caber, must compete in traditional highland dress.\

Locals and visitors alike attend to spectate and compete for Trophies and the prize money on offer.

I personally find the most entertaining sport to be the Tug 'O War between the local teams. The individual contests often lasting more than 20 mins. as each team struggles for the best foothold in order to get the "pull" on their opponents.

Then
Stonehaven is rich in history, from the earliest of paint clad pictish inhabitants, through roman garrisons nearby, Patriotic heroes and the bloody history of the centuries. With some persecution mellowing into the renascence that was the Barley era of expansion and development.

 Now
We have a thriving town serving both the Local countryside and as a commuter town for Aberdeen to the north. With an active recreational and working harbour, charming seashore frontage, but with all the modern amenities a town with a youthful and growing population requires.
